There are apps for your smart phone to track your diet, sugars, heart rate, sleep, and just about anything. The app can be great providing a wealth of information and enhance health care delivery. But, what about all that data? Not just the health information collected, but the name, addresses and other personal information. What about the safe transmission and storage?
The Department of Health and Human Service’s Office of Civil Rights has published guidance regarding health care apps and HIPAA. The guidance answers these questions:
1. How does HIPAA apply to health information that a patient creates, manages or organizes through the use of a health app?
2. When might an app developer need to comply with the HIPAA Rules?
